This book includes extensive references in order to provide a solid foundation for further research on international law. International dispute settlement and diplomatic negotiation requires significant study. The views and demands of domestic polities make it difficult to forge an agreement at the negotiating table on the world's contentious issues. In cases before the International Court of Justice such as East Timor (Portugal v. Australia) according to the Application, Australia had by its conduct failed to observe the obligation to respect the duties and powers of Portugal as the Administering Power of East Timor and the right of the people of East Timor to self-determination. In its Counter-Memorial, Australia raised questions concerning the jurisdiction of the Court and the admissibility of the Application. The textbooks in various countries would do well to make stronger engagement with international legal sources. During this last decade the international community established a number of formal dispute settlement mechanisms through new courts and tribunals. This book provides a sketch of international law's main principle. It aims at introducing the reader to the legal reasoning of international law and enables the forging of the tools that any international lawyer should possess.
